As a kid, I devoured books. My big sisters, Gail, Patty, and Janet, taught me to read when I was 4, and I read voraciously throughout my childhood. My parents constantly ordered me to "Go outside and get some fresh air!" So I would take my books outside and read in the fresh air.
I’ve worked as an 8th-grade English teacher, a magazine editor, an instructor for the Institute of Children’s Literature, a freelance adult writer, and a mind-boggling variety of other jobs. My collection of W-2s at tax time used to be quite impressive. Currently, I work for the website of the Minneapolis Star Tribune and for Winding Oak. In addition, I speak at writers’ conferences and school visits (despite a healthy dose of public-speaking anxiety).
And I write. I’ve published more than 100 children’s books for the educational market as well as some stories and poems for magazines, anthologies, and websites. Clarion Books published my first two trade poetry books, STAMPEDE! POEMS TO CELEBRATE THE WILD SIDE OF SCHOOL (finalist, Minnesota Book Award) and BOOKSPEAK! POEMS ABOUT BOOKS. I like to write all sorts of things, but poetry has been my number one love for at least five years.
And I still devour books, of course. Unfortunately, my memory’s terrible. If you ask me what I’ve read lately, I’ll likely look blank and say, “Umm…there was that one about…have you seen it? It has a girl on the cover with…no, that’s not right…” But I do still love to dive into the magical universe of a good book, a world where chauffeuring, cleaning, and checkbook-balancing don’t exist. Books were a haven for me as a child, and they still are now. I’m so pleased to be contributing toward that haven for today’s kids.
