Cinquains are everywhere lately! They're a fun, simple form that can pack a big punch. Check out Kelly Fineman's Kid Magazine Writers - Meter Readers column on cinquains! I learned some new things reading her column.

Here's a cinquain from my book, Fuzzy-Fast Blur: Poems About Pets (Capstone 2008), which I blogged about here.

Perfect Pocket Pet

no cage
no accidents
no smelly, icky chores
no running away--it's all yours!

And the Poetry Challenge this week at The Miss Rumphius Effect is an odd cinquain, so after you acquaint yourself with the basic rules, try that variation. My odd cinquain is part of this week's 15 Words or Less game.

Try a cinquain today, regular or odd, and have a good time with it!

The Poetry Friday roundup is at Check It Out. So...um...check it out!

I'm crazy about your pet rock cinquain.

Thanks for pointing me to Kelly's column. I had no idea when I chose odd cinquains this week that others were thinking about them too!

I think it means that I'm old if I say that I remember Pet Rocks in the 70's. And Pop Rocks.

Hey, who are you calling old? I remember them, too:>/ In fact, I had Pop Rocks a couple of weeks ago, so they're not really dated, right? Right?!

Cinquains

The cinquain was one of Myra Cohn Livingston's favorite poetic forms. She wrote quite a few and published them in her poetry books for children. It's too bad that most of the cinquains teachers have chldren write aren't true cinquains. I'm glad you've included some good examples of cinquains in the poetry books you did for Capstone.

Re: Cinquains
You know, I didn't know until reading Kelly's post that there was a count to the stresses, too. I thought it was just the syllable count. Do I feel stupid! But it's never too late to learn:>)

I'm going to have to go back and look at the cinquains in my books! Yikes!
